Affordable housing that is consistent with "smart growth" principles is critical to protecting open space, saving energy and water, and relieving traffic congestion throughout California. In 2004, the PCL Foundation in collaboration with the California Coalition for Rural Housing researched, published, and distributed a smart growth affordable housing guide for the fast-growing Central Valley. Smart Growth and Affordable Housing: Best Practices in the Central Valley, released in June, 2004, became the tool to convene a meeting of environmentalists, affordable housing advocates and developers, and public officials in an effort to identify barriers to construction of affordable housing in the Sacramento region.
Through its research, The Planning and Conservation League Foundation continues to promote the type of infill development that will protect agricultural lands and wildlife areas throughout California. This research, in turn, informs and guides the Planning and Conservation League's legislative efforts.
