INTERNSHIPS
PCL/PCLF internships are a great way to become familiar with environmental policy in California, and network with environmental non-profit organizations, government representatives, and other stakeholders. Possible work assignments include policy research, report writing, and outreach to community groups. Interns work on a core project and often provide support to PCL/PCLF staff on other assignments.
We are currently accepting applications for the following internship opportunities:
- Local Climate Action Initiative
- Central Valley Grassroots Guide
- Water Policy (one to three positions)
- Legislative Assistant
All applicants should submit a cover letter, resume and writing sample to: MRaymond@pcl.org
1. Local Climate Action Initiative
As part of our new Local Climate Action Initiative, PCL is helping local governments implement and better enforce policies that reduce the carbon footprint of new development. This is a volunteer position that requires a commitment of at least 10-15 hours per week for at least three months. A good fit for those with interest/skills in: California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA), land use, community outreach, volunteer programs and database management.
2. Central Valley Grassroots Guide
PCL is updating our Central Valley Grassroots Guide, which includes a comprehensive directory of environmental and social justice organizations from Chico to Bakersfield. The intern would be responsible for updating and expanding the Guide and would also work with PCL staff to publish the updated Guide on the web. This is a volunteer position that requires a commitment of at least 10-15 hours per week for two months. A good fit for those with interest/skills in: community outreach, database management, and website development.
3. Water Policy (one to three positions)
The Water Policy Intern will help advocate for wise water policy in the state by providing research and writing support to PCL’s Water Policy Program. Additional opportunities include lobby training, report writing, educational outreach, website development, and newsletter coordination. This is a volunteer position that requires a commitment of at least 10-15 hours per week for at least three months. A good fit for those with interest/skills in: policy analysis, California water issues, legislative advocacy, water conservation strategies (including recycled water), and environmental justice.
4. Legislative Assistant
Interns in the Legislative Program must be able to rapidly understand and analyze policy issues presented in the hundreds of bills PCL will review and comment on each year. Externs will also be asked to research and prepare background information and "talking points" on sponsored bills as the need arises, and prepare comment letters on non-PCL sponsored bills. All interns will have the opportunity to do work in the Capitol, such as attending hearings and meetings on assigned bills. This position requires good organizational skills, the ability to assimilate new information very rapidly, and an excellent writing ability. A good fit for those with interest/skills in: legislative advocacy, environmental law and policy, community outreach and coalition building, public policy and administration.
